Wild Wild West
Hoot-hoot! Hello there, young explorer! I am Professor Hoot. Fasten your time-travel goggles because we are flying back to the year 1849! The air is dusty, and people are traveling in big wagons pulled by oxen. Look at all the wooden buildings with swinging doors!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? People traveled across the country in 'covered wagons' which were like houses on wheels!"
Scene: Professor Hoot the owl wearing brass goggles and a small explorer child in a wooden 1800s town with horse carriages.
Look over there by the river! People are crouching down with shiny metal pans. This is the California Gold Rush. Everyone wants to find a 'nugget' of gold. They swirl the water and sand in their pans, hoping to see a bright yellow sparkle!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? The people who moved to find gold in 1849 were nicknamed 'Forty-Niners'!"
Scene: A sunny riverbank where people are using metal pans to look for gold in the water, sparkly gold nuggets in the sand.
Now, let’s fly over to a big ranch. A ranch is a giant farm where animals live. I see lots of cattle—those are the cows—and brave cowboys riding horses. The cowboys have to make sure the cows stay safe and don't get lost in the tall grass.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? A ranch can be thousands of acres big, which is like thousands of playgrounds put together!"
Scene: A wide open grassy plain with a big wooden ranch house and hundreds of cows grazing peacefully.
Yee-haw! Look at that cowboy use his lasso! He spins a rope in a circle to catch a runaway cow. Cowboys work very hard from sunrise to sunset. They wear leather 'chaps' over their pants to protect their legs from prickly bushes and cactus needles.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? Cowboy hats have wide brims to act like an umbrella against the hot sun and the rain!"
Scene: A cowboy on a brown horse spinning a lasso rope, wearing a large cowboy hat and leather chaps.
The sun is going down, and it's time for the 'chuckwagon' dinner! This is the kitchen on wheels. The cowboys eat beans and biscuits by the campfire and play the harmonica under the stars. It is time for us to fly home now. What a wild adventure!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? The cook on a ranch was often called 'Cookie,' and the chuckwagon was the very first food truck!"
