The Deepest Trench
Hoot-hoot! Hello, young explorers! Today, Professor Hoot is trading his feathers for a shiny yellow submarine. We are diving into the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot on Earth! As we start our engines, look at the bright blue water around us. It's like a giant swimming pool!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? The Mariana Trench is over 36,000 feet deep—that is deeper than the tallest mountain is tall!"
Scene: A whimsical owl wearing a tiny captain's hat and scuba goggles inside a bright yellow submarine with a round glass window, descending into light blue ocean water.
As we go deeper, the water feels heavy. This is called 'Water Pressure.' Imagine the ocean is giving our submarine a giant, super-strong hug! The deeper we go, the stronger the hug gets. Our submarine has to be made of very thick metal so it doesn't get squished like a juice box!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? Deep-sea animals have special bodies that don't get squashed by the heavy water pressure."
Scene: Inside the submarine, Professor Hoot points to a pressure gauge while outside the water turns a darker, navy blue. Bubbles rise past the thick glass window.
Look out the window! The sun has disappeared. We are now in the Midnight Zone. It is pitch black down here because sunlight can't reach this deep. Let's turn on our giant headlights! *Flash!* Now we can see the mysterious world hidden in the dark.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? Most animals in the deep ocean make their own light, just like fireflies!"
Scene: The yellow submarine with two bright beams of light cutting through ink-black water. Small glowing jellyfish float nearby.
We've reached the bottom! Look at those strange creatures crawling on the rocks. Those are Yeti Crabs! They don't have shells like the crabs at the beach. Instead, they have white, fuzzy hair on their arms. They look like tiny underwater snowmen with claws!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? Yeti Crabs use the 'hair' on their arms to grow their own tiny food called bacteria."
Scene: Close up of a white, fuzzy Yeti Crab standing on a dark volcanic rock at the bottom of the ocean, seen through the submarine window.
Time to head back up to the surface, my little owlets! We learned that the ocean is very deep, very heavy, and full of fuzzy surprises. I hope you enjoyed our watery flight! See you next time for another adventure!
