Professor Hoot's Midnight Moon Hop
Hoot hoot! Put on your shiny space helmets, explorers! Today, we are flying my Magic Rocket-Treehouse to visit our closest neighbor in the night sky—the Moon! It might look like a glowing ball of cheese from your bedroom window, but it is actually a giant, dusty ball of rock spinning around our Earth.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? The Moon is about 238,855 miles away from Earth! If you could drive a car to the moon, it would take about six months!"

Touchdown! As we step out, look at all these giant holes in the ground. These are called 'craters.' They were made a long time ago when big space rocks crashed into the Moon’s surface. Because the Moon has no wind or rain, these craters—and even the footprints from astronauts—stay there for a very, very long time!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? The Moon has no atmosphere, which means there is no wind to blow the dust around or erase footprints!"

Give a big hop! Boing! On the Moon, gravity is much weaker than on Earth. Gravity is the invisible force that pulls us down to the ground. Since the Moon’s pull is weak, you can jump six times higher than you can at home! I feel as light as a feather, which is easy for an owl to say!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? If you weigh 60 pounds on Earth, you would only weigh about 10 pounds on the Moon!"

Look back at the Sun! Did you know the Moon doesn't actually glow by itself? It’s like a giant mirror. It catches the light from the Sun and bounces it down to us on Earth. This is why the Moon looks different shapes sometimes—we only see the parts that the Sun is shining on!
