Leo and the Secret Squirrel Fortress
Leo walked through the golden woods and spotted his friends, the squirrel family. Squeaky, Nutty, and little Pip were busy gathering twigs. They were building a giant fortress for the grand Winter Ball. Leo wanted to help them make the tallest tower in the forest. It was going to be a magnificent castle made of oak branches and shiny acorns.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Squirrels can find thousands of buried nuts every year using their amazing sense of smell."
Scene: Leo (a happy, playful kid with brown skin and curly black hair), Squeaky (a fluffy red squirrel with a very long, bushy tail and a tiny green bowtie), Nutty (a round, grey squirrel with tufted ears and a small yellow tool belt), and Pip (a tiny, energetic brown squirrel with a white patch on its chest) stand in a sunny autumn forest next to a pile of sturdy oak branches.
Leo helped Nutty the grey squirrel stack the heavy sticks. Squeaky the red squirrel used her long tail to sweep the floor clean. Little Pip ran back and forth, bringing the smoothest acorns for decoration. They worked together under the shimmering sunlight. The fortress was growing taller and stronger every minute.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Squirrels use their big, bushy tails for balance when they are running and jumping."
Scene: Leo (a happy, playful kid with brown skin and curly black hair) helps Nutty (a round, grey squirrel with tufted ears and a small yellow tool belt) lift a heavy branch. Squeaky (a fluffy red squirrel with a very long, bushy tail and a tiny green bowtie) sweeps the dirt with her tail while Pip (a tiny, energetic brown squirrel with a white patch on its chest) carries a large shiny acorn.
Suddenly, a chilly autumn breeze whistled through the tall trees. The wind puffed its cheeks and blew a mighty gust right at the fortress. With a loud crack, the tallest tower wobbled and tumbled to the ground. The squirrel family looked very sad at their pile of broken sticks. Leo knew they needed a clever plan to make the fortress stay up.
Professor Hoot Says:
"A squirrel's nest is called a drey and is usually built high up in the crotch of a tree."
Scene: A pile of fallen sticks lies on the ground in the windy forest. Leo (a happy, playful kid with brown skin and curly black hair), Squeaky (a fluffy red squirrel with a very long, bushy tail and a tiny green bowtie), Nutty (a round, grey squirrel with tufted ears and a small yellow tool belt), and Pip (a tiny, energetic brown squirrel with a white patch on its chest) look sadly at the broken fortress tower as leaves swirl around.
Leo remembered seeing sticky pine sap on the old pine trees nearby. He showed Nutty and Squeaky how to use the sap like glue to hold the branches together. They also found heavy river stones to place at the bottom for extra weight. Now the tower was sturdy and could stand up against any grumpy wind. The family cheered as the last acorn was placed on top.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Pine sap is very sticky and acts as a natural glue that helps trees heal when they are hurt."
Scene: Leo (a happy, playful kid with brown skin and curly black hair) points at sticky golden pine sap on a tree trunk. Nutty (a round, grey squirrel with tufted ears and a small yellow tool belt) uses a small brush from his belt to apply the sap to a branch. Squeaky (a fluffy red squirrel with a very long, bushy tail and a tiny green bowtie) and Pip (a tiny, energetic brown squirrel with a white patch on its chest) look on with excitement.
That evening, the fortress glowed with the light of tiny fireflies. The squirrels wore their best fur coats for the magical Winter Ball. Leo watched as they danced and shared delicious hazelnut treats inside their strong castle. He was proud of his furry friends and their beautiful new home. The winter would be warm and full of music for everyone.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Some squirrels hibernate in winter, but many stay active and live off the food they stored in autumn."
Scene: Inside a massive wooden fortress decorated with glowing fireflies, Leo (a happy, playful kid with brown skin and curly black hair) watches Squeaky (a fluffy red squirrel with a very long, bushy tail and a tiny green bowtie), Nutty (a round, grey squirrel with tufted ears and a small yellow tool belt), and Pip (a tiny, energetic brown squirrel with a white patch on its chest) dance together. The room is filled with tiny tables covered in nuts and berries.
