Giants of the Blue
Hoot hoot! Put on your shiny scuba suit, little explorer! Today, Professor Hoot is taking you deep under the waves. Look at all the sparkly fish! But wait... look at that huge, dark shape coming toward us. It is bigger than a school bus, bigger than a house, it is Big Blue, the Blue Whale!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? A blue whale is the largest animal to ever live on Earth—even bigger than the biggest dinosaur!"
Scene: Professor Hoot the owl wearing a glass scuba helmet and a young explorer in a yellow scuba suit swimming in a bright coral reef as a massive blue shadow approaches.
Whoosh! Big Blue swims right past us with a gentle wiggle of his tail. He is so long that it takes a whole minute for him to pass by! Even though he lives in the water, Big Blue is not a fish. He is a mammal, just like you and me, which means he has a very special job to do every few minutes.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? A blue whale's tongue is so big that fifty people could stand on it at once!"
Scene: A majestic blue whale swimming horizontally across the scene, showing its massive length compared to the tiny Professor Hoot and explorer.
Suddenly, Big Blue swims up, up, up! He needs a big breath of fresh air. He doesn't have gills like fish; he has blowholes on top of his head. *Pshhh!* He shoots a fountain of water high into the sky before taking a giant gulp of air to go back down for a nap.
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? Blue whales can hold their breath for a long time, but they must come to the surface to breathe air just like us."
Scene: The blue whale at the ocean surface shooting a tall spray of water from its blowhole into the air, with the sun shining above.
Listen closely... do you hear that? *Mmm-lowww-hummm.* That is Big Blue singing a song! Blue whales don't use phones or computers. They use their deep, booming voices to talk to friends who are miles and miles away across the ocean. Their songs are the loudest sounds made by any animal!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? Blue whale songs can be heard by other whales over 1,000 miles away!"
Scene: Professor Hoot holding his wing to his ear underwater while glowing sound waves ripple out from the blue whale's mouth.
It is time for us to fly back to our treehouse, explorer. Big Blue gives a slow wave of his giant tail as he dives back into the deep, dark blue. We learned that these giants are gentle singers who breathe the same air we do. Goodbye, Big Blue! Until our next adventure!
Professor Hoot Says:
"Did You Know? A blue whale's heart is the size of a bumper car!"
Scene: The blue whale diving down into deep blue water, showing its tail fluke, while Professor Hoot and the explorer wave goodbye.
